Comiket 76
Comiket, also known as the Comic Market and sometimes referred to as Comike, is the world’s largest comic book fair, held twice a year (summer and winter versions, just like Wonderfest) in Tokyo, Japan. Entrance is free, but you are encouraged to buy the event catalog for 2,000 yen ($20).
Most of the comics sold are self-published works, called doujinshi in Japan, usually manga or novels created by amateurs. Groups of doujinshi artists refer to themselves as a circle.
The first Comiket was held in December 1975, with only about 32 participating circles and an estimated 600 attendees.
Comiket 76 (Summer 2009) was held last weekend from August 14-16 at Tokyo Big Sight in Odaiba.
The 3 day event drew about 560,000 attendees, a new record. The pictures below are courtesy of Yahoo Japan taken during the first day morning when it was the busiest.
Personally, I’m not into comics, but was curious about this event so I went on the Saturday afternoon (which was probably the least busiest time, even though there was still a lot of people).
Comiket also draws a large number of cosplayers (costume play) so it is also quite a popular attraction.

Well, book your tickets to Japan now as the next one is probably at the end of the year – that would be Comiket 77 Winter 2009. Christmas/New Year in Tokyo is not too bad, not too cold.
I was actually in Odaiba on the 16th, and I took a picture toward Big Sight, but I didn’t go there. I did, however, visit the Gundam, as well as the Museum of Maritime Science, which I enjoyed thoroughly. The Yurikamome Line was ridiculously packed on the way back to Shinbashi.
It took me about 30-40 minutes in a long lineup just to board the Yurikamome Line train.
Along the way, I did notice a similar long lineup to the train station near the Gundam. Was there a lot of people there when you visited on Sunday?
There were plenty of people there. Actually, everywhere was crowded, since it was a hot, sunny day. I got on the train at Daiba station, which also had a long lineup, though it was only about a 15 minute wait.

I hate events that only run over Saturday and Sunday, when I have to work. Then again, I was at the Comiket last winter and got that out of my system then, for the moment. Maybe next time.
Actually, this Comiket ran from Friday to Sunday, not sure about the winter version though? As I said, I am not a comic fan so I don’t think I’ll be attending another Comiket – it is also out of my system 🙂
