Japan in the News: Matsushita becomes Panasonic

Earlier this week, Matsushita Electric Industrial Co marked its 90th anniversary.  For those of you outside Japan, you may not be familiar with this company, but you will probably know its famous brands called Panasonic and National.  The company has also decided to unify under a brand name and selected Panasonic, due its greater global recognition as it competes with other brands such as Sony and Toshiba.

I took a picture of a Panasonic display (with a cafe) in the Roppongi Hills shopping area which was set up to coincide with this announcement.

  1. Yeah, I heard about this. It makes more sense to have one name rather than three (Matsushita, National, and Panasonic).

They decided to use the name Panasonic because it’s the most internationally recognized of the three.
